Bard
Bard the Bowman; the slayer of Smaug; the founder of the Line of Dale
Name and Story
Bard the Bowman was a captain of the bowmen of Lake-town, of the line of Girion, Lord of Dale, whose hair he was said to carry in black. When the dragon came to burn the town, Bard alone understood the creature’s weakness — the patch where the missing scale left the heart unguarded.
The Deed
- With the last of his arrows, the Black Arrow, he pierced the hollow of Smaug’s breast and slew the great dragon, and his fell from the sky upon Lake-town.
The King
- After the Battle of Five Armies he took the kingship of the restored realm of Dale, and his line (his grandson Brand) held the friendship of the Mountain through the War of the Ring.
