The Five Armies
the Battle of Five Armies at the Lonely Mountain
The Battle
The Battle of Five Armies was fought before the gates of Erebor after the dragon’s death, when the armies of the Dwarves (under Thorin’s host), the Elves of the wood, and the Men of the lake came to blows over the treasure — and were forced to turn and face the fifth host, the Orcs (with their wargs) that poured from the mountains. The “three” armies of the free folk joined against the Orcs in the great demand of the hour.
The End
The battle (T.A. 2941) was won by the linked arms of Elf, Man and Dwarf; but Thorin Oakenshield fell in the fight, and the victory was sealed by the coming of the eagles and the breaking of the Orc-leaders — the last great battle of the elder waning years, and the event that set the stage for the return of the Ring into the story.
