Gwaihir the Windlord; the chief of the Great Eagles
Name and Deeds
Gwaihir the Windlord was the chief of the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains, heir of the mighty birds of the Elder Days. He and his kindred rescued the dwarves from the tree-tops among the Wargs, bore them over the Misty Mountains, and came to the Battle of Five Armies.
The War of the Ring
Gwaihir bore Gandalf from Orthanc when the wizard was imprisoned by Saruman, came to his rescue upon the high peak where the Balrog fell and carried him thence to a land of the Elves, and at the Black Gate he and Landroval and Meneldor bore down the Ringwraiths from the sky, and at the last rescued Frodo and Samwise from the slopes of Orodruin. Gwaihir was long the friend of the Grey Pilgrim.
