Thranduil
the Elvenking of the Woodland Realm; father of Legolas
Name and Lineage
Thranduil was the king of the Silvan Elves of the great eastern wood (later Mirkwood), whose halls were hewn beneath the forest’s eaves and whose feast-hall caught the dwarves of the mountain in the tale of the Dragon. His son was Legolas, who walked in the Fellowship of the Ring.
The King of the Wood
- In the earlier age Thranduil dwelt in the great wood with his people, until the Shadow of Dol Guldur darkened the forest; his halls at the Forest Gate warded the wood’s edge, and his elves were renowned for their isolation and their gold-hunger toward dwarves.
- At the Battle of Five Armies he fought beside the Elves against the Orcs; in the War of the Ring he held the northern forest against the Shadow, and after the fall of Dol Guldur the woodland was cleansed. He passed at last with his people into the West.
