The Spiders of Mirkwood were monstrous spiders of ancient evil kindred that hung their webs about the dark paths of the great forest; they spoke in thin hissing voices and kept their captives for meat.
The Attack
They snared the thirteen dwarves as the Company passed, until Bilbo, invisible with the Ring, mocked them with songs and drew them off, and freed his friends with the sword Sting.
