The Sickness
The Dragon-sickness was the greed and madness that took the hearts of the heirs of the Mountain when the dragon’s treasure lay before them — a curse of gold and of the worm: the love of hoard, of the Arkenstone, and of the lordship it bought, which fell upon Thorin and his kin.
Its End
Bilbo’s giving of the Arkenstone was the breaking of the spell, bringing the armies to the brink of war; and only the death of Thorin upon the field, in the last hour, put the sickness from him — the healer of the heart being the gift of the younger days.
