Esgaroth

Lake-town upon the Long Lake; the town of the Lake-men

placeesgarothlake towndale

The Town

Esgaroth lay entirely built of wood upon great posts in the Long Lake, with a mighty bridge and a great house for the Master; it traded the elven-goods of the North with the lands of the South, and the men of the town knew and feared the dragon and its shadow.

The Quest

The dwarves passed through the town on the way to the Mountain, and its Master gave them boats to the shore whence the mountain could be climbed; it was Thranduil’s host and the Lake-men who marched to the siege, and it was the burning and death of Smaug that ruined the town and founded the new kingdom of Dale.
