Hamfast Gamgee; the gardener of Bag End, father of Samwise
Name and Story
The Gaffer (Hamfast Gamgee) was the gardener and small-holder of Bagshot Row in Hobbiton, the father of Samwise; a plain and obstinate hobbit of the old Shire, he knew the Bagginses’ garden as his own and held the folk of the Party Tree in high, matter-of-fact regard.
In the Tale
His comical pride in his son’s adventures, his rough opinions of the ‘Bagginses’ and the wizard, and his fierce denial of the ‘mysterious’ doings made him one of the living voices of the Shire that the story of the Ring remembered.
