The Gamgees
the simple and faithful gardeners family of Hobbiton
The Family
The Gamgees were the simplest of the families of Hobbiton — the gardeners and small-holders of Bagshot Row beneath the Hill, of whom Hamfast the Gaffer and his son Samwise were the best known; their name was a byword for plain faith and good earth.
The Honour
Even the Gamgees, whose kin had never wandered, rose at the end of the age: Sam became Mayor of the Shire seven times, and his garden of the mallorn flowered before his door in the Fourth Age.
Elanor and the Children
Of Samwise’s children the eldest was Elanor the Fair, born in the year that the Ring was destroyed; she kept the garden of Bag End and, in time, became the warden of the West-lands at the Tower Hills, the flower of the new age from which the golden bloom of the mallorn was named.
