The Village
Hobbiton was the chief village of the western Shire, built along the little river Water at the foot of the Hill, with its mill and its Party Tree and its many comfortable holes; its Bag End was the most famous smial of the land.

From Hobbiton Bilbo set out on his unexpected journey, and Frodo of the Ring; to Hobbiton returned the four hobbits after the great war to find it marred by the ruffians, and Sam’s new tree of the mallorn rose at last in the green place of the village.
