Farmer Cotton was the sturdy farmer of the East-farthing, father of Rose and lord of the Cottons’ fields; he was a loud, blunt, plain-spoken hobbit, and his family and his farm stood fast by the Gamgees when the ruffians came.
In the War
He was among the first to rise at the Scouring, and his sons fought at the Battle of Bywater; his farmstead and his kin were the strength of the hobbit-revolt, and his daughter’s marriage with Samwise bound the two houses.
