The Homecoming

The Scouring of the Shire was the rising of the hobbits of the Shire against the ruffians of the beaten Wizard — return of Saruman, who had taken the Shire, cut down the trees and spoiled the mill and the holdings, and set his fierce men over the little folk.

The Battle

At the Battle of Bywater the hobbits rose against the thugs; Saruman was cast down at Bag End by his worm Grima (Gríma’s blade) and his spirit went up in a puff of smoke — and the Shire was cleaned in glad work, and Sam planted the mallorn’s seed.
