The Book
The Return of the King, the final volume, brings the war to its height: the ride of the Rohirrim, the Battle of the Pelennor, the storming of the passes, and the march of the Captains of the West to the Black Gate — while the Ring-bearer mounts the Stair of Cirith Ungol and comes at last to the Cracks of Doom.
The Ending
With the Ring unmade and Sauron overthrown, the volume closes with the crowning of the King (Aragorn), the Scouring of the Shire, and the sailing of the Ring-bearers from the Grey Havens — the last of the Third Age.
