The Tooks
the adventurous old family of the Great Smials of Tuckborough
The Family
The Tooks were one of the greater families of the Shire, whose smial was the Great Smials at Tuckborough; for two generations, said the hobbits, they had been ‘a little above the ordinary’ — the boldest and most adventurous of folk, with the Old Took’s repute for wandering and fairy-marriage.
In the Tale
Pippin (Peregrin Took) was the son in the line of the Tooks, and the adventurous spirit of his kindred ran in him; the Tooks’ fame reached even into the sayings of the Party Tree.
