Kindred and Nature

Hobbits (Halflings) are a small and old people, close kin of Men in body but smaller, with no beards and hairy feet, dwelling in holes in the earth. They love peace, good food, and quiet, and laugh at the great folk — yet the greatest deeds of the Third Age were wrought through them.

The Shire-folk

In the Third Age the hobbits of the Shire — Bagginses, Tooks, Brandybucks and the families of the farthings — were peaceable farmers and gardeners; their quiet strength carried the Ring to its destruction, and their great ones, Bilbo and Frodo, stand among the famous of the age.
