The Song
Bilbo’s Last Song is the brief poem of Bilbo Baggins at the time of his leaving, anticipating the journey to the Grey Havens and the sea - ‘day is ended, dim my eyes, but journey long before me lies’; it was published in 1974 and set to music by Donald Swann.
Its Echo
Though it lies outside the finished book, the song is remembered as the farewell of the Ring-bearer, and belongs to the departure at the end of the tale.
