The Road

The Great East Road (the East Road) was the great highway running across the lands of the West from the Grey Havens to the East, of age-old paving (the work, said the elves, of the Dwarf-folk), that passed through the Shire, over the Brandywine, by Bree and the Last Bridge, and climbed the Pass to Rivendell.

In the Tales

It carried the suddenly-met dwarves of Thorin on the road to the Mountain, and all the great companies of the War of the Ring marched by it or near it; it was ‘the Road’ of the saying, ever winding on to the East.
