the miry fenlands west of the Weather Hills
The Fen
The Midgewater Marshes were the vast, sodden fens between the mid-road and the Weather Hills, overgrown with reed and dark water, where the ways of the northern lands were lost amid the clouds of biting midges.
The Crossing
In the flight to Rivendell the hobbits and Strider crossed the fens by night in the dark of the starless sky, listening for the Riders; the marsh-water and the insects made the night long, and the memory of the Midgewater stayed sharp in the travelers’ tale.
