Déagol
the hobbit who found the Ring in the Gladden Fields
Name and Deed
Déagol was a Stoor-hobbit of the river-lands, a friend (and kin) of one Sméagol; while fishing with him in a little boat upon the Gladden he was drawn down by a great fish, and in the mud of the water his hand found the Ring that had lain there — the One Ring of Isildur.
His End
Having seen it, his friend Sméagol was caught by the Ring’s longing and, urged by its whisper, strangled Déagol and took the Ring for himself — the deed through which the Ring returned at last into the history of the Shire, and the name of Déagol is remembered as the first of its new victims.
