the marshy mire where Isildur perished and the Ring was lost
The Fields
The Gladden Fields were the broad water-meadows where the Gladden river flowed into the Anduin, a country of reeds and pools and upgrown mists; by them marched the little company of Isildur after the Last Alliance.
The Loss
In an ambush of the Orcs the king’s men were slain with arrows, and Isildur, fleeing with the Ruling Ring upon his hand, was drowned in the deep of the Gladden; the Ring was buried in the mud for long ages, until the hobbits Déagol and Sméagol (Gollum) found it in the stream — the seed of the whole later story.
