The Winter

The Fell Winter was the longest and bitterest winter of the later age (T.A. 2911): wolves and hunger pressed into the lands, the Brandywine was frozen grey and over, and the hobbits remembered it as the winter that passed into their songs and their fears.

In the Tales

It was near this time that the wolves came over the frozen river and Bilbo Baggins, a child of the Shire, was born to live into the world of the later setting; the hard winter is among the age-lore of the hobbits.
