The Tree

The Old Man Willow was a huge and ancient willow that stood amid the banks of the Withywindle in the Old Forest; it had a mind and a deep, great hatred - the age-old malice of the oldest trees - and its roots and its song could take the weary and cast them into the dark grasp of the water.

The Rescue

It caught the hobbits with its roots and thrust their feet into the stream, singing them to sleep; only the coming of Tom Bombadil, who knew its name and its ways, loosed them from the willow’s hold.
