The Tongue

The Black Speech is the harsh and foundless tongue devised by Sauron in the Dark Years for his servants, the speech of Barad-dûr and of the Orcs of Mordor; even its sound was felt as a curse by the Elves. The inscription of the Ring — Ash nazg durbatulûk — is written in the pure Black Tongue of the Dark Lord.

Its Use

The Black Speech was little known and less loved; the Orcs corrupted it into their jabbering, and only the highest of Sauron’s servants spoke it as he did, so that its echo in the songs and the histories is the memory of the Dark Years.
