Name and Place
Mordor — “the Black Land” — is the dark region east of the Mountain of Shadow that Sauron made his stronghold in the Second Age: the land guarded by the mountains’ walls, with the volcano Orodruin and the tower Barad-dûr at its heart, and the plain of Gorgoroth. Its fires forged the One Ring, and its armies vexed the western lands until the Last Alliance; (its later history belongs to the Third Age).
