the Ash Mountains; the northern wall of Mordor
The Range
Ered Lithui (the Ash Mountains) were the great range that bounded Mordor on the north, from the gate of Cirith Gorgor to the eastern smoke of the land; bare and desolate, they were the wall of the Shadow’s fortress, over which no road of escape ran.
The War
Against their foot the slag-fields and the armies of Mordor gathered; through their northern gate the Host of the West marched at the end, and their black heights witnessed the fall of the Dark Tower.
