The Ephel Dúath

the Mountains of Shadow; the western wall of Mordor

The Wall

The Ephel Dúath were the mountain-walls of the west and south of Mordor, dark and ominous, through which the fugitive roads of the Shadow passed at the Morgul Vale and at Cirith Ungol; they were crowned with the vigil of Sauron’s watchers.

The Passage

The Ring-bearers climbed the weary stairways of the valley to the pass of Cirith Ungol, and beyond lay the dark road toward the Mountain of Doom.
