The Plague

The Great Plague was the terrible pestilence that came out of the East (the Shadow spilled from Mordor) in T.A. 1636: it swept the lands, emptied the cities and the villages, slew the king of Gondor and his sons, and passed north to the Shire, where the weather-diminished hobbits of the empty villages were taken by the wasting.

Its Cost

The loss of the population and the hurt of the far-stretched lands weakened Gondor for long ages, and the memories of the great dying were laid up in the annals of the North and the old songs.
