Name and Position

Arnor — “the Northern Kingdom” — was the realm of the heirs of Elendil in the north-west of Middle-earth, founded at his landing in Eriador (with its chief city Annúminas) at the beginning of the Second Age’s ending. Its kings held the northern palantíri and the crown of the High King who reigned over the South-kingdom of Gondor as well.

History

After the deaths of the kings and the loss of Isildur, Arnor was divided among three heirs (Arthedain, Rhudaur, Cardolan), and its power waned in the long wars with Angmar; the last northern kingdom fell before the age’s close. The remnant of the people became the wandering Rangers who guarded the old lands — and from whose line Aragorn at last restored the kingship of both realms.
