The Elendilmir — the Star of Elendil, also the Star of the North — the white jewel of the North-kingdom: a white star-stone set in silver, in shape a five-pointed, shimmering jewel the like of the White Star that rose over the North-kingdom’s kings.
Description
The Elendilmir was a gem of white fire, the great star of the North-kingdom, “a jewel of pure star-fire”, set in a ring of silver, worn on the brow of Elendil and of his heirs, the kings of Arnor and the Lords of Andúnië. It was the emblem of the king of the North, the “Star of Elendil” that the Dunedain of the North bore in memory of the white star that shone over the ships of the Faithful at their landing; and the crown of the King of Westmarch among later days.
History
Wrought in Númenor of old in the “skill of the ancient days”, the Elendilmir was borne by Elendil out of the Downfall to Middle-earth, and descended to the kings of Arnor. In the age of the lords of the North it was thought lost, carried away in the wreck of the North-kingdom or in the dark years of the Watchers; but at the end of the Third Age a star like it rose again — when the heir of Elendil took up the Crown of Gondor and the North-kingdom was renewed, the Star of Elendil again shone upon the brow of the king that Aragorn would bear, the White Star of the rebirth of the North-kingdom under Elessar.
