Name and Making

Narsil — “red and white flame” — was the great sword of Elendil, forged in the elder craft of the Noldor (per the tradition, by the smiths of the Elves of Eregion in the friendship of the age): — the Quenta/Of the Rings: at the founding of the Realms, Elendil bore Narsil, it is the king-sword of the Exiles, the emblem of the North-kingdom’s claim.

The Breaking and the Ring At the

The Last Alliance (the last fight before Barad-dûr), as Elendil fell with Sauron in the overthrow, the blade was shivered — and his son Isildur, taking up the hilt, cut the One Ring from the hand of the Dark — the deed (and the shards) he bore away north. The broken sword, kept by Elendil’s heirs for ages, awaited its reforging in a later age as Andúril, “the Flame of the West”.

Significance

Narsil is the “great sword of the kings” — the blade that stood (and broke) at the world’s great battle, whose shards (with the “Sword that was Broken”) carry the memory of the last alliance and the hope of the king’s return through all the later history.
