The Battle
The Battle of Dagorlad (the Battle-Plain) was the first great field of the Last Alliance, fought before the gates of Mordor after the alliance had come down through the vale of the Anduin; there the hosts of Elves and Men under Gil-galad and Elendil broke against the armies of Sauron, and there fell many, but the Dark Lord was rolled back into the Black Land.
The Siege
After the victory the alliance entered Mordor and laid siege to Barad-dûr for seven years, at the end of which Sauron himself came out and fought the duel on the slopes of Orodruin that was the world-turn — the fall of Gil-galad and Elendil, and the taking of the Ring by Isildur.
