The Desperate Suit

The Battle of the Morannon was the desperate sortie of the Captains of the West — the few thousand men of the Host of the West under Aragorn and Gandalf, with Legolas and Gimli, the Dúnedain of the North and the valemen of Gondor — marched to the Black Gate with the Mouth of Sauron, offering battle to the Dark Lord to draw his Eye from Mordor.

The End

When battle was joined beyond counting, the Ring was unmade in the fire by Frodo’s mercy and Gollum’s fall; Sauron’s power went with it, the Barad-dûr fell and the gates were cast down, and the host of the Eye broke in rout and the Eagles and the clouds of the mountains came to the aid of the West.
