The Volume

The War of the Ring is the eighth volume of The History of Middle-earth, the chronicle of the later drafting of The Lord of the Rings — the marches toward the Pelennor, the coming of the King, the battle at the Black Gate, and the end of the quest, as set in the manuscripts and maps that preceded the published text.

Its Use

For the reader of the annals it shows the shapes of the story as they grew, and it is the companion record to the war-maps that the finished book preserved.
