Beregond

the Guard of the Citadel who befriended Pippin

Name and Story

Beregond was a Guard of the Citadel of Minas Tirith in the time of the war — the watchman who spoke with Pippin upon the walls, delighted in the hobbit’s tale, and was made the extra guard of the young companion of Denethor.

His Deed

When the Steward would be burned upon his pyre, Beregond, in pity and against his orders, broke the password and slew the guards who tried to hold the door, saving Faramir; for that service he was assigned to the White Company of the Citadel, and his son Bergil grew up in Pippin’s friendship.

His Son

His son Bergil, a young lad of the city, became the friend of Pippin during the days of the siege, showing the hobbit the ways of Minas Tirith; the boys’ friendship was one of the small lights that brightened the dark hour of the war.
