Name and Kind

The Rohirrim are the Men of the Riddermark, the great horsemen of Rohan, descendants of the Éothéod who swore the Oath of Eorl and received the plains between the rivers. Tall, fair of speech, brave and stern, they ride with spear and shield, and their charge was the terror of the Southrons and of the Orcs.

In the War of the Ring

They met their doom and their glory at the Hornburg and upon the Pelennor — Théoden’s last ride, the blowing of the horns, and the great charge that broke the siege of Gondor and saved the day of the West.

The Captains of the Mark

Among the many captains of the Mark are remembered Gamling, the grim old rider who kept the watch at the Hornburg; Grimbold and Elfhelm, marshals who led the hosts of the West and East folds; and Dúnhere, lord of Harrowdale beneath the mountains. All rode in the great wars, and their names stand in the rolls of the riders who held the Isen and broke the siege of Gondor.
