The Fires
The Beacons of Gondor were the great signal-fires set upon the heights and the ranges of the White Mountains, linking the tower of Amon Dîn (and others) so that news could flame from city to Rohan in a single night.
The Alarm
When Gondor was environed by war, the fire of the beacons went up and was answered across the mountains, and the messengers ran to Rohan; in the tale the lighting of the beacons (the famous call of the film and the book) was the sign that the aid of the Rohirrim had been summoned.
