Names

Osgiliath, the “Citadel of the Stars” (or “Fortress of the Host of Stars”), is the name of the ancient capital of Gondor.

Geography

The city stood on both sides of the great river Anduin, about halfway between Minas Anor in the south-west and Minas Ithil in the north-east; a great stone bridge spanned the waters beneath towers and roofs of stone, and quays took the ships that came up from the sea.

History

Isildur and Anárion raised Osgiliath near the end of the Second Age as the chief city of the southern kingdom, and there in the Great Hall the thrones of the two sons of Elendil were set side by side; in its Dome of Stars lay the Master Stone of the palantíri. In the war of the Last Alliance Anárion defended the city against Sauron. For more than a thousand years Osgiliath remained the capital and greatest city of Gondor; and only in the Third Age, by war and plague, did it become a place of ruins and ghosts.
