The Kin-strife
the civil war of Gondor over the crown and the old blood
The Strife
The Kin-strife was the great civil war of Gondor in the mid-Third Age: King Eldacar, of mixed Northman blood, was driven from the throne by the proud Númenórean lords, who set the usurper Castamir upon the seat after slaying many of the king’s kin.
The Return
For ten years Castamir ruled cruelly, until Eldacar returned with his Northern allies, slew the Usurper in the battle before the city, and regained his crown — but the realm was sundered and diminished, and the sons of Castamir carried the hate of the seas into the taking of the corsairs.
The Kings in the Strife
Castamir the Usurper (the Great Kinslayer) was a lord of Gondor who seized the crown in the name of the old Númenórean houses; his power lay in the fleet and the great haven of Pelargir. Eldacar, son of a Northman mother, was driven from the throne, hid in the North, and returned after ten years to slay the Usurper before the city and regain his crown — but the hate of the strife split the royal line and sowed the seeds of the later ruin, as the sons of Castamir carried their enmity into the taking of the Corsairs of Umbar.
