Gildor Inglorion; the wandering High Elf met in the Shire

Name and Role

Gildor Inglorion is a High Elf of the Third Age, met by Frodo in the woods of the Shire on the night when the Black Riders were abroad — a wanderer, returning toward the Sea with a small company of his kin. His patronymic Inglorion, “son of Inglor”, echoes the older name by which the Noldor prince Finrod was known in the earliest versions of the legend; the tale of the Ring chooses not to say more of his people.

In the Tale

He gave Frodo and his companions shelter and counsel that night, warned them that the riders who sought the Ring were servants of the Enemy, and sent them on his good will. He is not met again in the tale; his passing company serves as a glimpse of the ancient Elves still lingering in the wilds of a fading age.
