Name and History
The Entwives were the wives of the Ents, the gardeners of the great open lands, who loved order and rows and the small tame things. When the darkness of the East destroyed their gardens, they wandered away and were lost; the Ents have ever sought them, and their meeting is one of the unhealed sorrows of the tale.
The Song
The old song of the Ents speaks of their lost garden-lands, and the hobbits of the Shire reminded the tree-herd of them — for the Entwives, if they live, are the gardeners of the wide and fruitful fields that Men call the Shire.
