The Breaking of the Fellowship

the sundering of the company at Amon Hen

The Parting

The Breaking of the Fellowship was the sundering of the Company of the Ring upon the hill of Amon Hen: when Boromir was flung down in the woods trying to take the Ring, and the hobbits fled, the fellowship of the Nine was scattered at the last — two slain, three lost, and Frodo, with Sam, gone alone across the river toward Mordor.

The Sign

In the boat that bore Boromir over the falls, the Fellowship that had walked from Rivendell came to its end; the later story of the Ring-bearer and of the wartorn West is all one long road from that parting.
