The Council

The Council of Elrond was called at Rivendell in the autumn of 3018, when the tidings of the Enemy were gathered: Gandalf’s tale of the Ring and of Saruman’s treachery, the report of the Dúnedain, the embassies of the Elves, the Dark Riders’ hunt, and the misfortunes of the war. There it was resolved that the One Ring must be destroyed in the Cracks of Doom.

The Quest

At the end Elrond declared that the Ring must be borne to Mordor — a task for the small, not the great — and Frodo said “I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way”; with him went the eight Companions of the Fellowship.
