The Ford

The Fords of Bruinen crossed the river that tumbled down from the borders of Rivendell; there the flight of the Ring-bearer came to its crisis when the Black Riders pressed upon the wounded Frodo at the last bank.

The Flood

At the bidding of Elrond the river rose in a great flood of water and stone that swept the Nazgûl and their horses away into the wild from the threshold of the Last Homely House — the first of the great strokes against the Enemy in the War of the Ring.
