Name and Nature

Glorfindel — “the Golden-flower” — the lord of one of the great houses of Gondolin (the House of the Golden Flower), among the most renowned and formidable of its captains: fair and golden, of the Noldor, in the city’s last hour he is the second of its great heroes (with Ecthelion).

The Fall at the Pass

  • At the Fall of Gondolin, when the remnant of the city fled through the high pass of the Cirith Thoronath (“the Eagles’ Cleft”) in the Encircling Mountains, a balrog and its squadrons caught the rear-guard. Tuor held the passage while the fugitives pressed on; and

Significance

Glorfindel (with Ecthelion) personifies the redeeming courage of Gondolin’s fall — the golden lord who gives his life to buy the remnant’s passage; and his later return makes him one of the mythology’s rare “reborn” heroes, a proof of the mercy that even the Doom could not wholly refuse.
