The Betrayal
The Fall of Gondolin came after the long peace of the hidden valley was broken: Maeglin, taken captive in the wastes and tortured, betrayed the secret of the secret ways to Morgoth, and in the hour of the feast the hosts of the Enemy — Orcs, dragons, and the Balrogs under Gothmog — came at Gondolin from the north.
The Sack
The city of white marble and many towers burned beneath the dragon-fire; Ecthelion slew Gothmog in the square and fell, Glorfindel hurled the Balrog of the pass with him into the abyss, and only the remnant under Tuor and Idril, guarded by the Eagles of the Crissaegrim, escaped into the wild — bearing with them the last hope of the Noldor.
