Salgant
lord of the House of the Harp; the faint-hearted counsellor
Name and Role
Salgant was a lord of Gondolin, head of the House of the Harp, and a counsellor of the king Turgon. In the oldest account of the city he is remembered as faint-hearted: in the councils of Gondolin he counselled submission or surrender to the power of Morgoth (the contrary of the bold lords), and was openly scorned by the mightier of them, such as Ecthelion and Glorfindel.
In the Fall
His end at the sack is variously told and not clearly recorded; like the other lords he perished in the ruin or was lost in the long march of the remnant to the Havens. He stands in the tradition as the type of the fearful counsellor, set against the valour of the great captains of the city.
