The Argonath
the Gates of the Kings; the Pillars of the Kings at the north-gate of Gondor
The Pillars
The Argonath were the two great stone pillars carved as the images of the kings of old (Elendil and his sons, or the ancient lords) that stood on the river-banks at the broad inlet north of Gondor; a great sign of the kingdom and the ward of the way.
The Passage
When the Fellowship of the Ring rowed down the Anduin past these grim wardens, the height and silence of the Pillars awed them; the Gates of the Kings marked the edge of the realm toward which the way of the river ran.
