Names and Lineage

Elladan and Elrohir were the twin sons of Elrond and Celebrían and the elder brothers of Arwen. Of the Half-elven house of Eärendil, the choice between the kindreds of Elves and Men lay open before them as it lay before their sister, and they were counted with the sons of the Peredhil.

Life

  • Champions of Rivendell: When their mother Celebrían was stricken by orcs in the wilds (T.A. 2509) and at last departed into the West, the twins became the fierce hunters of the orc-kind of the mountains, and rode often among the Rangers of the hidden North.
  • The War of the Ring: In the War they came south with the Grey Company and with Aragorn — riding with the Rangers through the Paths of the Dead and in the wars of Gondor, taking part in the great deeds against the hosts of Mordor.
  • The Grey Havens: At the end of the Third Age they stood at the Grey Havens among those who gathered at the last parting; and after the sailing of their father (T.A. 3021) they tarried a while in Middle-earth.

Significance

Elladan and Elrohir are the martial strength of Rivendell’s house in its last age — the avengers of their mother and the companions of the Dúnedain — and, with their sister, the last bearers of the Half-elven hope of the West.

Skipped-uncertain

The published texts do not record what lot the twins finally chose, nor the manner or time of their leaving Middle-earth; these matters are left untold.
