Name and Story

Gilraen was the wife of Arathorn and the mother of Aragorn; after her husband’s fall she brought her two-year-old son to Rivendell, where Elrond took him as his own ward and counselled that his lineage should be hidden until he was of age.

Her Words

She would not stay among the Elves, save at the last, saying: ‘I have no husband, and no hope of children.’ When young Estel came of age she returned to her own folk, and died before the great war; her words — ‘the gift of men is not bound to the hope’ — were remembered by Elrond as her last counsel to her son.
