Names

Haudh-en-Ndengin, “the Mound of the Slain” (also “the Hill of the Slain”), is the name of the great grave-mound of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad; it is called also the Haudh-en-Nirnaeth (see Haudh-en-Nirnaeth).

History

After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad the Orcs of Melkor gathered the bodies of the Elves and Edain of the fallen Union, with their gear and weapons, and heaped them into one huge mound that rose in the midst of the burned waste of Ard-galen. Beneath it lay Huor; and Rían, his wife, came thither on her way from Hithlum seeking him, and laid herself down upon the mound and died. In the lands of Dor-lómin the mound was known simply as the Great Mound.
